PURPOSE

The backup template is used to detail the backup policies for client device(s). In particular, it lays out the days/times the backups are run and how often the backups are run, as well as any additional set-up such as replication and backup copies. The template also provides the option to create a relationship with the client devices via the relationship editor option, which shows which devices are associated with the policy; relationships can also be created to associate any client users who have ownership of the procedures in use as well.

GUIDELINES

1. In Dreamtsoft, navigate to CMDB. At the bottom left, go to Governance -> Policies. This will open up a page that shows the different policy templates. Click the ”+” to add a new one. Select the Backup POL template.

2. At the top, change “Company” to the appropriate client.

3. Proceed to fill out the start and end times for the backup window and the days backups run.

4. Fill out the number of recovery points (i.e., how many days back the recovery points go) and how many full backups will be implemented.

5. If any backup copies will be used, check the box for “Backup copy enabled”. This will display a tab called “Backup copy”. Going to this page will allow setting up the copy location (either through an on-premise device or through one of the datacenters), the time/days these are created and the number of retention points used. To completely remove the backup copy set-up, go back to the “Backup” tab and uncheck the “Backup copy enabled” checkbox.

6. To add replication set-up, check the box for “Replication enabled”. This will display a tab called “Replication”. Going to this page will allow setting up the replication time window, the types of retention points for this, and whether this will be completed on an on-premise device or at one of the datacenters. To completely remove the retention set-up, go back to the “Backup” tab and uncheck the “Replication enabled” checkbox.

7. The “Restore evidence” tab is used to attach evidence of the quarterly restores completed by the vITMs. On that tab, click “Attach file” to add any screenshots or other documentation that shows that the restore was completed.

8. A relationship can be established in the policy for certain client devices in order to establish that they use these backup settings. To add devices, click “Relationship Editor” at the bottom. On the page that opens, select “Governance for” under CI. Locate the devices to be added, check the boxes next to them, and then click “Attach”. This will associate the devices with this policy.

A client user can also be associated with the policy by going to Relationship Editor -> Owned. Search for the user(s), check the box next to them, and then click “Attach”. This will grant the user ownership to the policy.

9. Once completed, save the policy and then change the slider to Active status.
